The latest phase of the move towards greener - and cheaper - street lighting across Middlesbrough is underway.
Over the coming year, nearly 6,500 existing lighting units will be upgraded to new energy-efficient LEDs in areas across Middlesbrough, including Easterside, Marton East, parts of Coulby Newham and Acklam.
The £2.5m programme follows a first phase which saw more than 13,000 units replaced between 2015 and 2017.
Last year it emerged that Middlesbrough Council's plan to replace street lamps with energy efficient LED fittings would cost over £1m more than originally planned.
Installing the low-energy lights across the town had first been estimated at £7.5m.
But when the installation of lights was split into two phases, due to problems with central Government funding, costs soared to nearer £9m.
This led to the issue being taken to a scrutiny review at the request of then Conservative councillor for Kader, Cllr Ron Arundale. www.ledlightinside.com
In March, council officers revealed they had managed to strike a new deal with Salix Finance - an agency that provides interest-free Government funding to the public sector to improve their energy efficiency - that would save the council around £1.5m.
